Paving the Way for a Better Future With a Sustainability Mindset
With sustainability being top of mind for patients, consumers, employees, partners, governing bodies and other stakeholders, medical device OEMs are taking a refreshed approach to their environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives. By reconsidering and reassessing product design choices, manufacturing and production processes, sourcing partners and what happens at a product’s end of life, you’re setting your company up not only for a stronger competitive edge but also for healthier outcomes — for your bottom line and for the planet.
Global Sustainability Support for Medical Device OEMs
Accelerated, purposeful action is crucial to overcoming the fast-growing e-waste crisis. OEMs have long driven incredible advances in technological capabilities that enhance quality of life and fuel the global economy — and now, they’re in a unique position to set the standard for environmental, social and governance ESG initiatives.
As your partner in global sustainability and a long-time participant in the global technology ecosystem, Shyft is here to help you start or continue from where you currently are on your sustainability journey.

Keep Products Operating Optimally — for the Long Run
Shyft provides circular economy support for medical device OEMs by developing and executing service programs and leveraging our vast logistics network to help extend product lifecycles and keep technology in use for as long as possible. These important initiatives are carried out through a combination of our ISO 13485–certified facilities and our supply chain management, global field services, reverse logistics and repair/refurbishment operations. For medical device OEMs, benefits of participating in the circular economy include:
-
Taking action to protect the environment gives you a powerful story to tell — as long as you follow through on your sustainability commitment.
-
Increasingly, consumers are actively seeking out eco-friendly brands, and 86% of people prefer to support or work for companies that care about the same issues they do.
-
The product sale is just the beginning. Participating in the circular economy opens the door to profitable opportunities throughout the product lifecycle.
-
Prioritizing efficient, effective and reliable repairs builds trust with customers whose patients’ lives literally depend on them.
-
Professional repairs help keep healthcare provider businesses running smoothly, building loyalty through trusted partnership.

Boosting the Circular Economy on Your Consumable-to-Repairable Journey
For OEMs in nearly any industry, designing products with repair and refurbishment in mind from the outset often yields the opportunity to participate in the circular economy. Customers can’t always afford new medical devices, especially with high-end equipment such as CT/CAT scanners, MRI machines, surgical robots and ultrasound machines.
Shyft’s end-to-end services and global team of service experts are here to support your consumable-to-repairable (C2R) feasibility assessment and solution implementation journey. Specific strategies and capabilities vary between product types and lifecycles, but in general, our C2R approach includes:
-
- Global, local or regional
- Whole component replacement vs. PCBA integrated circuit repair
- Return to vendor and/or repair
- Scrap disposition definition
- Preventative maintenance items or refurbishment
-
- New vs. used
- Original component recovery from defective units
- Original vs. qualified vs. open-market sources
- Existing packaging, new packaging, hybrid .
-
- Customer developed
- OEM developed
- Shyft developed
- Jointly developed
- Determine IP ownership
- Test coverage needs (varies by manufacturer and technology type)
-
- Cost savings (reuse vs. new)
- Extended product lifecycles
- Supports sustainability and ESG goals
- Fewer environmental impacts
- Quality improvements
